Update trek numbers on the Track

Figures recently released by the Kokoda Track Authority (KTA)  for the month of July show a decrease of 35%  against 2009  figures. Though this is a disappointing  percentage it does however show an increase on earlier months figures which have been down nearly 50%.

Back Track are very confident that the 2011 Trekking season will  show a  return to strong growth. Overall our enquiry rate has been very  good  and highlighted by  a sharp increase of bookings coming from referrals.   Currently all our 2010 treks are full and we are  taking bookings for 2011.

The Kokoda Track mis truly one of the great jungle walks of the world.

First Aid courses for PNG Trek staff

In the worldwide trekking industry, the Kokoda Track  is only a ” New  Walk”  but it is  rapidly gaining recognition worldwide.  We still await our first  true overseas booking. We have had many NZ trekkers but we consider them to be part of  our  big local family.

Safety and health issues along the Kokoda Track have been negatively canvased in our local media now for many years.  The slightest incident on the Track has the potential of becoming a major headline.  As a trekking industry we must all do everything we can to improve our Health and Safety image  in the eyes of potential trekkers.   Our ability to demonstrate that the health and safety of our clients and our trek crews and leaders is paramount  to the long term success of the Track as a major world trek.

Much work has been done over the last 2 years along the Track and in the support network to improve issues of   management and safety concerns. One such initiative is the introduction of First aid courses for trek staff.

This worthwhile initiative of the Kokoda Track Authority will  significantly assist in improving the quick treatment of minor injuries and as well  could save lives.  Four of our key  crew members are currently undergoing  a 3 day first aid course in Port Moresby.

Small initiatives like this demonstrate to the world that the Kokoda Track management are looking  to the future and that the Kokoda Track is going forward as a safe  destination for trekkers.
